In a first since 2009, Home Office statistics revealed an increase of 6% in number of Tier 4 visas granted to Indian students, with an overall increase of almost 3% for all student visa granted.

Office of National Statistics (ONS) data reveals 9,207 Tier 4 student visas were approved for Indian applicants compared to 8,692 for the same period.

Popularity of UK as a preferred destination for Indian students has been severely impacted with the abolition of post-study work visas in 2012 a major draw for Indian students.

It is possible that an increase in the number of scholarships may have attributed to this increase. For 2016 UK has seen Indian students pick a wider variety of courses including law, media, fashion over the more traditional courses like business and engineering.
During the recent visit of British PM Theresa May there was an expectation that the students visa norms would be relaxed, however nothing of this sort happened, so it remains to be seen if the increase is a start of a long term breakthrough or a short term blip.
