Entry rules eased for Indians – No quarantine for fully vaxxed travellers to UK

“No quarantine for India travellers to the United Kingdom fully vaccinated with Covishield or another UK-approved vaccine from 11 October,” British High Commissioner to India Alex Ellis tweeted.

In a move that is seen to bring the entry clearance requirements on par – from October 11 Indians who are fully vaccinated with Covishield or any other UK-approved vaccine will now not be required to quarantine when they arrive in the United Kingdom.

This announcement marks the end of a row over what was widely perceived as unfair imposition of Covid-19 quarantine rules.
Effective from 11 October, Indians who have been fully vaccinated with WHO approved Covishield vaccine will not be required to undergo the mandatory 10-day quarantine on arrival in the UK.

What are approved vaccines in the UK for Corona (Covid-19) – 2021

Travelers must have had a complete course of one of the following vaccines at least 14 days before you arrive in England:

  • Oxford/AstraZeneca
  • Pfizer BioNTech
  • Moderna
  • Janssen

Formulations of these vaccines, such as AstraZeneca Covishield, AstraZeneca Vaxzevria and Moderna Takeda, also qualify as approved vaccines.

Those who have had COVID-19 and have only had one dose of a 2 dose vaccine must follow the rules for unvaccinated arrivals.

Entering the UK – if you are full vaccinated

Before you travel to England, you must:

  • Make a booking and pay for Covid-19 test on day 2 – to be taken after arrival in England (separate rules may apply for other parts of UK).
  • Complete a passenger locator form before you arrive

What if I am travelling to UK for less than 2 days

After you arrive in England, you must take a COVID-19 test on or before day 2.

If you will be in England for less than 2 days, you still need to book and pay for a day 2 COVID-19 test. You only need to take the test if you are still in England on day 2.

What to do if I am travelling to UK for less than 10 days?

If you are in England for less than 10 days, you need to quarantine for the time you are in England, travellers will need to book day 2 and day 8 travel tests. Travellers only need to take the tests if you are still in England on those days.

Can a person who has taken covaxin travel to UK from India if they have a valid visa?

- Question asked in a forum
Yes, you can travel to UK if you have a valid visa. The relevance of the vaccine is only for the quarantine requirements.

How can I check if I am fully vaccinated?

Fully vaccinated means that you have had a complete course of an approved vaccine at least 14 days before you arrive in England. The day of taking the dose is counted as Day zero.

The vaccine must be administered under either:

  • the UK vaccination programme
  • an overseas vaccination programme with an approved proof of vaccination for travel to the UK

Check which vaccines are approved and the list of countries and territories with approved proof of vaccination.

Even if you are not fully vaccinated, the fully vaccinated rules apply if you:

  • are under 18 and resident in the UK or one of the countries or territories with approved proof of vaccination
  • are taking part in an approved COVID-19 vaccine trial in the UK or the USA (US residents only for USA trials)
  • cannot have a COVID-19 vaccination for a medical reason which has been approved by a clinician under the new medical exemptions process, and you are resident in England

What to do if you are not fully vaccinated

If you are travelling to England, then after you arrive in England you are required to:

  • Quarantine at home or in the place you are staying for 10 days
  • Take your pre-booked COVID-19 test on or before day 2 and on or after day 8 – to be booked before the travel.
