What is European Passport Return Service
UK Home Office has recently launched the European Passport Return Service (EPRS) on the 1st October 2016. The service has been launched to improve customer experience and to reduce the high volumes of requests being received by European Caseworkers at UKVI to return documents.
Who is it for
Sole applications from EEA nationals who are applying online for a Registration Certificate or for permanent resident under the European Regulations. The service is available for EEA and Swiss nationals applying online who have no associated family member applying at the same time. The service covers European and Swiss Nationals applying online to confirm their right to reside in the UK.
But, European nationals have right to free movement, right?
Yes, EEA nationals do have the right to free movement across the European Union. And when they arrive in the UK they have an ‘initial right of residence’ for the first three months. After that they must be exercising their Treaty rights (as a worker, job seeker, student, self-employed or self-sufficient person) to be classed as a qualified person under the Immigration (EEA) Regulations 2006 (“the Regulations”).
Once an EEA national has lived in the UK in accordance with the Regulations for a continuous period of five years they can then apply for a document certifying permanent residence.
How successful has EPRS been?
EPRS went live on the 1 October 2016. UKVI has received 2198 online applications as of the 9 November 2016, and of those approximately 400 customers have chosen to use the European Passport Return Service (EPRS).
How does it work?
The EEA and Swiss nationals have to complete an online application and then take their passport (together with the other documents UKVI require) to one of the 46 participating Local Authorities or nominated UKVI premium service centre (in Belfast or Glasgow) who will check and copy the passport return it to the customer straight away.
