Trying to bring your loved one to your country can be stressful. There are so many different rules and regulations involved with getting a visa for your partner.

In the United Kingdom, the category to apply for in bringing your spouse or partner to the UK is a UK fiancé visa. This route is for you to bring over your husband or wife-to-be and put the distance behind you.

If you’re looking into getting a fiancé visa in the UK, whether for yourself or your partner, don’t worry! We’ve put together a quick guide on what you need to know to get your UK fiancé visa.

UK Fiancé Visa Requirements

Before you rush to get started with your fiancé (or fiancée) visa application, it pays to make sure you know what the requirements are. You’ll need to meet these prerequisites before you’ll be able to apply for or receive your visa.

The requirements for the UK fiancé visa are applicable both to yourself and your partner in the UK.

  • You must both be at least 18 years old
  • You must get married within six months of receiving your fiancé visa
  • Your fiancé must either be a UK citizen or a permanent resident of the United Kingdom
  • You will need to have evidence proving the relationship is genuine. This can include photos, chats and witnesses
  • You must have met with your partner in person before applying for the visa
  • You must be planning to cohabitate with your partner in the United Kingdom
  • Your UK partner must earn at least £18,600 per year or must be able to prove that they receive that amount from other sources
  • You must be able to show that you and your UK partner have suitable living accommodations

If you don’t meet these requirements, you won’t be able to move forward in the application process. Make sure that you have met these criteria before beginning the application.

UK Fiancé Visa Costs

Outside of the UK fiancé visa’s financial requirements, there are also associated fees. You’ll need to make sure that you have these amounts of money in order to start the application process.

Not only will you need to prove that your UK partner makes £18,600 per year, but you’ll also need to prove that you have the same amount of money. You’ll also need to prove additional amounts for any dependents.

In the event there are children from the relationship then, for your first child, you’ll need to prove another £3,800. Every child after that will add £2,400 to the total financial requirement.

The good news is that this doesn’t need to be proved only by salary. You can also show that you have this amount of money or income through:

  • Maternity or paternity leave pay
  • Sick pay
  • Adoption pay
  • Savings accounts
  • Shares and stocks
  • Pension payments
  • Financial gains from property

Once you’ve proven that you have the right amount of money, you’ll be able to apply for your visa. This comes with additional fees.

To apply for the UK fiancé visa, you’ll be required to pay £1,523. For each child or dependent you plan to bring with you, you’ll need to pay that amount again. The fee for Adult Dependent is different, the applicant is required to pay £3,250 for that person.

The UK Fiancé Visa Process

After paying your fees, being able to prove your financial requirements, and having met all other prerequisites, you’re ready to submit your application. There are a few steps that you’ll need to take.

First, you’ll start by gathering all your evidence of your relationship. You’ll want to create a portfolio of photos, chats, and other documentation that can prove your relationship is genuine and subsisting.

Then, you’ll need to fill out paperwork. The paperwork should include the following information:

  • Your name and birthday
  • Details of your relationship with your UK partner. Include how often you see each other, how you met, and why you got engaged
  • Details of any past visits to the United Kingdom to see your partner
  • Photocopies of your passport and passports of any dependents
  • Any divorce certificates and details of a previous marriage
  • Information about any criminal convictions
  • Parental and familial information

Once you’ve prepared your documentation, you’ll submit your paperwork to the UK immigration office. They may request additional information or interviews, or they may process your visa.

The standard processing time for a fiancé visa application is 12 weeks. Additional information requests can delay the time, however, so be sure to give yourself plenty of leeway before any travel plans.

After Your Application Is Approved

If your fiancé visa application gets approved, good for you! Now it’s time to plan your trip to the United Kingdom.

It’s essential to note that you will have to get married to your partner in the first six months that you’re in the United Kingdom. Failure to do so will lead to the expiration of your visa and being forced to leave the country.

When you arrive in the United Kingdom, you’ll need to speak with border control. Since you’ll be arriving on a fiancé visa, there’s a good chance they will ask to see additional documentation. Bring your fiancé’s visa portfolio and copies of the application information to help with this.

It’s also important to know that you’ll be expected to live with your partner once you arrive in the United Kingdom. Failure to do so can make it more difficult for you to obtain your spousal visa after your fiancé visa expires.
