UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak promised a 5-step plan to send back illegal immigrants

In this article we have covered these important points:

Introduction: Illegal Immigrants in the UK

  • On Tuesday, December 13, 2022, the UK’s recently elected Indian-origin Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak set out a new strategy
  • He has confirmed a 5-step plan which will be executed to send back illegal immigrants from the UK
  • Along with curbing illegal immigration, Rishi Sunak has also promised to end the government’s backlog of asylum applications by the end of 2023
  • Rishi Sunak said in a statement in the House of Commons, “It is unfair that people come here illegally. It is unfair on those with a genuine case for asylum when our capacity to help is taken up by people coming through, and from, countries that are perfectly safe”

The UK government’s new 5-step plan

Rishi Sunak and his Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, devised the government’s 5-step plan, and here’s what the agenda involves:

Step 1: Deploying additional staff

Deploying additional staff who will be assigned to a new unit that will monitor small boats crossing the English Channel. A dedicated team will be put in place to handle claims from Albanians, who constitute the largest cohort of illegal migrants in the UK. The government will also establish a new permanent unified Small Boats Operational Command to coordinate intelligence, interception, processing, and enforcement. It will employ over 700 new people and double the funding provided to the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) to combat organised immigration crime in Europe.

Step 2: Housing 10,000 asylum seekers waiting for their claims

Housing 10,000 asylum seekers waiting for their claims to be processed in less expensive accommodations than hotels. And alternatively, look out for different ways to counter the GBP 5.5 million daily bill for the use of hotels to house asylum seekers.

Step 3: Immigration officials being able to increase raids on illegal workers

The plan also focuses on freed-up immigration officials being able to increase raids on illegal workers by 50%.

Step 4: Doubling the number of asylum application caseworkers

Doubling the number of asylum application caseworkers, changing the entire process with shorter guidance, fewer interviews, less paperwork, and on-boarding specialist caseworkers based on nationality.

Step 5: Addressing the large numbers of illegal migrants from Albania

Addressing the large numbers of illegal migrants from Albania – which is a rather “safe, prosperous European country”. Albanians account for 1/3rd of those arriving by small boat.

PM Rishi Sunak’s Statement

  • “The Prime Minister of Albania has himself said there is no reason why we cannot return Albanian asylum seekers immediately,” said Sunak
  • “Last year Germany, France, and Sweden all rejected almost 100% of Albanian asylum claims. Yet, our rejection rate is merely 45%. That must not continue. So today I can announce a new agreement with Albania – and a new approach,” added Rishi Sunak
  • “We must be able to control our borders to ensure that the only people who come here come through safe and legal routes” said Sunak, who also announced plans for new legislation that will set an annual quota for refugees entering the UK
  • The agreement includes embedding UK Border Force officers in Albania’s Tirana airport to combat organised crime, as well as establishing a new dedicated unit for the country to expedite cases within weeks, staffed by 400 new specialists
