With a short-term study visa, applicants can enter the UK for up to 6 months to do a short course, or up to 11 months if they are coming to learn English.

A Short-term Study visa may be appropriate if the applicant is:

  • A CATS or exchange student who will be attending UH for fewer than six months.
  • Recurring module(s), with a turnaround time of fewer than six months.
  • An external research student, who needs to come to school for research purposes or to obtain training for less than six months.
  • Returning to retake an exam with less than a six-month waiting period.
  • Returning to attend a viva.

What is a UK Short-term Study visa?

  • An applicant can apply for a Short-term study visa to study the English language in the UK.
  • This visa is for English language courses in the UK lasting longer than 6 months and up to 11 months.
  • An applicant can stay in the UK for the same duration as the course, plus an extra 30 days. As long as the applicant is not overstaying for more than 11 months.

What is the eligibility to apply for a UK Short-term Study visa?

Applicants for short-term study visas must:

  • Be legitimately seeking admission to enrol in short-term classes.
  • Joining a short study programme in the UK (max 6 months – or 11 months if studying an English course).
  • Have enough money to sustain while studying in the UK; must be able to pay for the tuition fee, housing, and living costs.
  • Possess a study offer letter from the university.
    Be able to afford the return and/or subsequent travel.

Applicants under 18 years of age must also:

  • Have made plans for the trip and accommodation in the UK.
  • Have parental or guardian consent.

What is NOT permitted in the UK on a UK Short-term Study visa?

  • Either paid or unpaid employment.
  • Take part in a paid or unpaid internship, even if this is a part of the course.
  • Apply for additional visas from the UK.
    No access to National Health Service (NHS)/
  • Bring any dependents.

The applicant might need to go through an interview with the Home Office as part of the visa application procedure since they must truly want to enter the UK as a temporary student.

The applicant must make a note that

  • They cannot study on any other course or change their current course while in the UK.
  • Applicants are not permitted to study at a state-funded school.
  • Applicants cannot work or do business (this includes paid or unpaid work).
  • This visa cannot be extended. The applicant has to return to their home country after course completion.
  • This visa also does not allow the applicant to bring family members to the UK or apply for most benefits (public funds) or the State Pension.
