Following the UK’s exit from the European Union, all EU and European Economic Area (EEA) residents must have residence status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) to continue living and studying in the UK. This is equally applicable to their family members who may or may not be EU/EEA citizens.

Irish citizens do not need to apply to the EUSS, but their family members who are non-British or Irish are required to apply.

• If you’ve lived in the UK for 5 years or more, you can apply for ‘Settled’ status through the EU Settlement Scheme. This legally permits you to continue living in the United Kingdom for an unspecified duration.
• If you have lived in the UK for less than 5 years, you may be given a ‘Pre-Settled’ status. This allows you to stay in the United Kingdom for up to 5 years before applying for a Settled status.
• Even if you have a EU Settlement Scheme Permanent Residence document in the UK, you are still required to apply to the EUSS to stay in the UK after June 2021.

The EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) applies to EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens even if they have been in the UK for many years and/or if they have been married to a British spouse for a long time.

If an individual has moved to the UK before 1st January 1973, they might have received an Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) status automatically if they are an EU, EEA, or a Swiss citizen.

If you already live or work in the UK, you can apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to receive

• Pre-Settled OR Settled status
• Permanent Residence
• Frontier Worker Permit
