How can I renew my British passport?

  • A digital photo.
  • A credit or debit card.
  • Passport.

Step 2. Paper application form renewal

The applicant can also opt for a paper application form renewal. This costs £85 (application fees updated as of May 2022).

How can I track my British passport application?

  • The applicant can track their passport application immediately on the UK Government website if they have applied online.
  • Applicants can look for their passport application reference in the confirmation email.
  • Then visit the GOV.UK website and search ‘Track your passport application’. After which a link is displayed that takes the visitor to the passport tracking page.
  • Applicants can only use this service if their reference begins with PEX or POD.

If an applicant fills in a paper form, they are required to wait for at least 3 weeks after applying, before they can track the application status.
The applicant is required to give their name, address, email, and either the:

  • 10-digit barcode number from the application form, or
  • The 9-digit number on the receipt if the applicant has applied at the Post Office.
  • The applicant will then receive an email mentioning the status of their passport application.

How will I receive my new British passport?

The new passport will be sent to the applicant via a courier or Royal Mail. They’ll either:

  • Post it through the applicant’s letterbox.
  • Hand it to the applicant if they are home.
  • Leave a card or post for the applicant saying how they can get it (it will not say the package contains the passport).

When should I renew my British passport?

The UK passports for adults need to be renewed every 10 years, and the UK government expects the passport renewal process to take up to 10 weeks. This process is faster online than by mail.

A UK passport must be valid for at least three more months before the applicant tries to enter an EU member country.

The applicant must renew their passport before they can travel if:

  • Their passport has expired.
  • They do not have enough time left on it (Note: How much time one needs on their passport depends on the country they are visiting).
  • The applicant has a burgundy passport or has ‘European Union’ on the cover, they can still use it as long as it’s valid for travel.

What to do with the unexpired UK visas?

  • The applicant will be required to send their previous passport with the visa attached to it with their application.
  • The applicant’s previous passport will be returned to them.
  • The applicant will be able to use the visa if they carry both passports.
