What are the UK Short-term work visas?

UK Short-term work visas are also known as ‘Temporary work’ visas. An applicant comes to the UK for a shorter duration to take up a job role in the country, offered to them by their UK sponsor. It is mandatory for the applicant to have a ‘Certificate of Sponsorship’ before they start their visa application. The applicant’s UK sponsor provides this Certificate of Sponsorship.

Following are the different UK Short-term work visas:

UK Charity Worker visa

Applicants can apply for a UK Charity Worker visa if they want to do unpaid voluntary work for a charity. The applicant must have a Certificate of Sponsorship from their UK sponsor and have enough money to support their stay in the UK – a minimum of £1,270 in the applicant’s bank account is mandatory.

UK Graduate visa

Individuals who are already in the UK on a UK Student visa, can further apply for a UK Graduate visa. This post-study work visa allows the applicant to stay in the UK for at least 2 years after successfully completing a study course in the UK. The applicant must have studied a UK Bachelor’s Degree, Post Graduate Degree or another eligible course on their UK Student visa or UK Tier 4 (General) Student visa. It is mandatory that the applicant’s education provider (for example, a university or college) informs the UK Home Office about their successful course completion.

UK Government Authorized Exchange visa

Applicants must apply for a UK Government Authorised Exchange visa if the applicant wants to come to the UK for a short time for work experience or to do training, or an Overseas Government Language Programme, or research, or a fellowship through an approved government authorised exchange scheme. The applicant must have enough money to support their stay in the UK – a minimum of £1,270 in the applicant’s bank account is mandatory.

UK Youth Mobility Scheme visa

The UK Youth Mobility Scheme is a cultural exchange platform that allows individuals aged between 18 years and 30 years, from participating countries and territories, to experience life in the UK for up to 2 years. However, dependents are not permitted to the UK with the main applicant on this visa. It is mandatory for applicants to have £2,530 in savings. This visa is not a route to settlement in the country.

UK High Potential Individual visa

The Home Office launched the UK High Potential Individual (HPI) visa on 30th May 2022. This visa is focused to attract high-skilled foreign university graduates – who will be allowed to work and stay in the UK for 2-3 years, depending on their degree level and applicants won’t need a job offer or sponsorship for this visa. However, this visa will not lead to settlement in the country. The main applicant can be accompanied by a dependent partner and children (under 18 years) to the UK on a UK High Potential Individual (HPI) visa.

UK Expansion Worker visa

The UK Expansion Worker visa has replaced the UK Sole Representative visa (UK Representative of an Overseas Business visa) from 11th April 2022. This visa is for overseas workers who are undertaking temporary work assignments in the UK. The worker must be either a senior manager or a specialist employee in that overseas company. This route can only be used when the business has not yet begun trading in the UK. The main applicant can be accompanied by a partner and children (under 18 years) to the UK on this visa. The UK Expansion Worker visa does not permit settlement in the UK.
