Launched in April 2019, we are coming up to the 6-month review period of the Innovator visa category. The UK Innovator visa is one of the newly introduced categories of UK visas. Presented as a replacement to the previously existing Tier 1 Entrepreneur visa of the Points Based System (PBS). The purpose of this visa category is to facilitate experienced entrepreneurs i.e. founders/innovators set up their business in the UK.

This category of visas entails the prospective applicant going through 2 stages to facilitate entry into the UK market. The first being; securing an endorsement from one of the limited numbers of ‘endorsing bodies’ available for the said applicant. The second stage is applying for entry clearance as an innovator and demonstrating access to £50,000 along with meeting the other general eligibility requirements under the Immigration Rules.

The Home Office has recently revealed that it has received only 4 applications (from around the world) under the Innovator visa UK category since April 2019 (from its introduction) till June 2019. Contrast this to the number of applications received for the Tier 1 Entrepreneur visa that it was intended to replace was 1900 applications in 2018.

This has raised several concerns regarding the viability of the newly introduced category altogether. It is of the general opinion that the costs of introducing and administrating this new category of visas would be difficult to recover.

The SmartMove2UK we have received a great deal of interest from entrepreneurs around the world regarding this particular category of visas and are looking forward to assisting them to make successful applications for the same.
