UK switches to ‘Plan B’ to tackle the new variant – ‘Omicron’

With the emerging threat of ‘Omicron’ – an advanced variant of Coronavirus, the UK Government has set out revised conditions to keep the situation under control. Omicron is identified as more infectious and less responsive to vaccines; it was first detected in South Africa.
“It’s not a lockdown, it’s Plan B,” Mr. Boris Johnson told a Downing Street news conference. Mr. Johnson and Health Secretary Sajid Javid have confirmed and announced updated COVID-19 regulations in England, Wales, Northern Ireland & Scotland. They have also made new inclusions to the ‘Booster Vaccines’.
So, which are the rules you need to be vigilant of?
- From 10th December 2021, face masks will be required in more public settings – including theatres and cinemas
- From 13th December 2021, people will be asked to work from home where possible. The same has been imposed in Wales and Scotland
- From 15th December 2021, the NHS COVID-19 Pass will also be required for visitors to nightclubs, indoor unseated venues with more than 500 people, unseated outdoor venues with more than 4,000 people and any event with more than 10,000 people
- COVID-19 passes are also currently required for venues in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
Who should take a booster jab?
- Booster jabs should be taken by everyone above 18 years of age
- The gap between 2nd dose and booster shot will be reduced to 3 months from 6
- People with weak immune system will be given a 4th booster dose, not before 3 months after their 3rd
- Children aged from 12 to 15 will be invited for a 2nd dose, 3 months after their first
- Vulnerable people will be contacted first, followed by older age groups, then younger ones
- People are being urged not to try to book their booster until the NHS says it’s their turn
