Before we get to it, let’s just give a brief overview of what the Shortage occupation list UK 2019 signifies and what occupations does it concern.

Tier 2 Shortage Occupation List

Scroll down to have a look at the Shortage Occupation list for 2019. But first check out this short 10 – second video explaining the shortage occupation list.

The Shortage Occupations List is a list that consists of all the job sectors that are currently facing a shortage of skilled workers in the UK. The occupations that are in high demand in the UK and have to be filled immediately, are put into this list by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC).

Besides being a good indication for skilled professionals from different parts of the world looking for immigration options to the UK regarding the chances of their Tier 2 Work Visa plans, it also serves a purpose for UK employers in their process of applying for a Tier 2 Sponsor license with the RLMT (Resident Labor Market Test). If UK employers are looking to fill a vacancy that belongs to a job in the Shortage Occupation list 2019, then they do NOT have to advertise their jobs to local workers first, as they would have to for any other job. Check out the blog post on Resident Labour Market Test here.

To know more about this, let’s look at what the Resident Labor Market Test is all about.

What is a Resident Labor Market Test?

Employers in the United Kingdom who want to hire an overseas immigrant or outside of Europe Economic Area (EEA) on a UK Tier 2 General Visa need to conduct the Resident Labor Market Test first. This test involves an advertisement posting for the citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA) for skilled jobs before the employer can look for candidates outside the EEA.

Through this test (RLMT), British employers must obtain a Tier 2 sponsorship License to prove to UK Immigration authorities that at this point of time, no British settled worker is suitable for the job at hand. If by chance, a UK settled worker with appropriate skills and experience is applicable for the role, then an employer cannot hire an employee from outside the EEA despite higher skills and experience.

By definition, A UK settled worker is:

  1. a UK National;
  2. a European Economic Area (EEA) National who is exercising his ‘treaty right ‘ to work in UK;
  3. UK Territory Overseas Citizens

An employer can avoid this hassle if the job he is trying to fill falls into the Shortage Occupation list presented below. If you would like to know more About the RLMT, click here.
