What is a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) for a UK visa?

If you’re coming to the UK to work, you may need a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from your employer. A Certificate of Sponsorship is an electronic certificate that confirms your job offer and your employer’s sponsor licence number.

Applicants applying for certain UK Visas will require a CoS to claim their visas. For example, a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) is mandatory if you are applying for a UK Skilled Worker visa, UK Health and Care Worker visa, UK Global Business Mobility visa or UK Temporary Worker visa.

All the migrants planning to work in the UK in a proper position and preparing to apply for a UK Skilled worker Visa will require a Certificate of Sponsorship because the application form of this particular visa demands a unique Certificate of Sponsorship reference number.

There are several important details mentioned in Certificate of Sponsorship that you will require while applying for your UK Visa for instance:

  • Standard Occupation Classification
  • Your salary
  • Start and end dates of your job

How to check Certificate of Sponsorship status online?

Many applicants have this dilemma regarding checking the status of a Certificate of Sponsorship online. However, applicants cannot directly check the status of their Certificate of Sponsorship through the UKVI website or Sponsorship Management System (SMS).

  • Check the format of the CoS – there is a specified format of a certificate of sponsorship and it can be useful to check if the document you have received is in the right format.
  • Check for consistency of information for example your personal information, data about your work category, salary etc.
  • Check the sponsor’s information for example is the sponsor listed on the sponsor licence register.

Points to Remember while checking Certificate of Sponsorship status online

  • Once your employer applies for a Certificate of Sponsorship, UKVI generally approves it within a day and it appears in your employer’s SMS account, except if UKVI feels the need to verify certain details shared by the employer then this 24-hours may be extended.
  • Make a clear note that only your UK employer can assign the Certificate of Sponsorship to you and then you can access the details to fill your Visa application.

If you encounter any issues related to Certificate of Sponsorship or have questions regarding your UK Visa application, you can speak to the experts to help verify the credentials and your eligibility.

How to get Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) reference number

In this article we have covered these important points:

What is a Certificate of Sponsorship?

A Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) is a computerised document. Its purpose is to provide proof that a migrant has been offered a job or place of study by a licensed UK employer. It carries the information of the person it is granted to, details of the establishment that is sponsoring, an expiry date, and a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) reference number. It is used for tracking and processing purposes by the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) when an individual applies for a UK visa.

What are the visa categories for which CoS is required?

Certificate of Sponsorship is required for the following visa categories:

The Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) reference number

The Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) reference number is a combination of letters and numbers that is generated by the UKVI’s sponsorship management system. The reference number consists of 11 alphanumeric characters. For instance, E4K9J86066C. When an individual applies for a UK Visa, they are required to provide this reference number as part of their application to link it to the corresponding CoS issued by their sponsor.

The unique reference number plays a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy and validity of the sponsorship details provided by the sponsor and helps the UKVI in verifying the information during the visa application process.

The reference number can be found on the Certificate of Sponsorship provided by the employer.

What is the difference between CoS and CAS

The Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) is essential for recruiting workers through the UK sponsored work visa procedures. Before a company can sponsor a migrant worker, they must first submit a Certificate of Sponsorship indicating that the terms of the applicable visa have been met.

On the other hand, CAS is an abbreviation for “Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies.” The CAS is a computerised record produced by the University for the Home Office and is essential for your Student Visa application. The University will generate a CAS for you and provide you your CAS number and CAS statement, which will include the information sent to the UK Visas and Immigration Department. You will need this information to apply for a UK Student Visa.

Conclusion: Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) reference number

The reference number is crucial in a Certificate of Sponsorship. The CoS enables for the migrant to travel to the UK. Without one, the visa application will not proceed forward. It is important to enter the correct Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) reference number to show that you have a valid Certificate of Sponsorship.
